10-32 Microdot Connector Detail
These connector threads are the same as those on a 10-32 machine screw. Practitioners in the NDT industry, including the petroleum oil and gas production segment, tend to call these "Microdot" connectors. But there were many connector models, of various shapes and sizes, made under the Microdot name. (Microdot Inc. has since been acquired by Tyco.) Several industries and applications tend to instead call these "10-32" connectors; you will often find this designation on velocity sensors and accelerometers, force sensors, acoustic sensors, various piezoelectric applications, radio (RF) and WiFi tranceivers, and professional audio lapel mikes, to name a few.

About Hi-Pot Testing

Today's ultrasonic applications demand more of transducer cables than ever before. Composite materials, air-coupled scanning, and other high power domains can cause pulser-receiver equipment to drive transducers with energies that can easily exceed 1000 volts. But the Microdot, Lemo, and BNC connectors made for RG174 cable, not to mention the cable itself, typically are designed and rated by manufacturers for as little as 30 volts. Too often the result is arcing, insulation breakdown, poor signal performance, and in most cases an eventual total cable failure, as carbon traces build up and cause a short between conductors.

In order to prevent this from happening to you, we test connectors and coaxial cable to destruction when selecting parts suppliers. During assembly, we use special techniques and materials that we've evolved over time to improve the voltage-carrying capacity of those parts. Before shipping, we hi-pot test each and every cable assembly we build, making sure it can withstand 1500 volts of potential between core and shield, end-to-end, including connectors. Not all make it -- it's our most demanding test. Yet even with this added cost in our manufacturing process, we still ship some of the least-expensive cables in the industry, and we're content knowing that these cables will perform better in the field.
